Calcutta Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to pay wages to Hindu scholars who perform funeral on seven cremation grounds situated in the border of KMC. The municipal corporation will pay 380 rupees to the priests for every funeral. This decision has been taken at a time when the Lok Sabha election is over. It is notable that in this election, the BJP has consistently been accused of Mamta Banerjee and Muslim appeasement. Perhaps the state government of TMC has taken this decision to answer the BJP’s allegation. Mamta Banerjee has also been telling her about her secular policies.
According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), it was decided to give the salary before the Lok Sabha election. But due to the election, its announcement was postponed. Mayor Firhad Khan said we are implementing it now. There are no regular means of income for these priests. They depend entirely on the amount received by the bereaved family. So to help them, we decided to give 380 rupees for the last rites of the body. It is notable that in 2012, Chief Minister Banerjee had announced that Imam and Muazzin would be given a salary of Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000. This decision created controversy because Hindu pundits were demanding similar benefits and the BJP had criticized the government for this.
