The AAP government has asked Delhi-based schools to implement guidelines to reduce the weight of children’s school bags. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) issued guidelines in 2016 to protect children from the burden of heavy bags. Senior officials of the Directorate of Education (DOE) said, new instructions have been issued to schools for implementation of the guidelines. Heavy bags are a serious threat to the health of school students. The official said, heavy school bags have a serious, adverse physical effect on growing children that can damage their ‘vertebral columns’ and knees.

Also, schools with two or multi-storey buildings, where children have to climb stairs, heavy bags can add to the problem. It is also a reason for nervousness. The guidelines were formulated considering that textbooks, guides, homework and classwork notebooks, rough work notebooks, water bottles, lunch boxes add to the weight of the school bag. Sometimes school bags are too heavy.
