Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was appointed the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) on Monday. The task of CDS will be to bring better synergy in the functioning of Army, Navy and Air Force. According to the government order, the appointment of General Rawat to the post of CDS will be effective from December 31. General Rawat assumed the post of Army Chief on 31 December 2016. He was retiring on Tuesday. Prior to becoming army chief, he had handled the Line of Control with Pakistan, the Line of Actual Control with China and various operational responsibilities in the Northeast. The Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs last Tuesday approved the creation of the post of CDS which will serve as the Principal Military Advisor to the Defense Minister in all matters related to the three services. General Manoj Mukund Naravane has now become the new Army Chief of the country. He took charge on Tuesday morning.

General Naravane has replaced General Bipin Rawat who was appointed the first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the country on Monday after serving as Army Chief for three years. General Naravane was currently the Deputy Chief of the Army.General Naravane was the Chief of the Eastern Command of the Army, which took care of the nearly four thousand km border with China before becoming Deputy Chief of Army Staff in September.During his 37 years of service, General Naravane held many important positions in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. He commanded the National Rifles Battalion in Jammu and Kashmir and led the Infantry Brigade on the Eastern Front.He was part of the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka and was a defense attach at the Indian Embassy in Myanmar for three years.General Naravane has been a student of the National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy.He was commissioned in June 1980 in the Seventh Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment.
