Former President Pranab Mukherjee has advocated to increase the number of Lok Sabha members by almost double. Pranab said that now the number of Lok Sabha constituencies should be increased from 543 to one thousand. Also, the number of Rajya Sabha members should also be increased. He said that this is necessary given the population and plurality of the country. In the second Atal Bihari Bajpayee Memorial Lecture organized by the India Foundation, Mukherjee said, “The last Lok Sabha member number was changed in 1977. Then the Lok Sabha constituencies were determined according to the 1971 census. At that time the country’s population was 55 crores. Since then, the country’s population has increased more than twice. Therefore, the restriction on the reorganization of the Lok Sabha constituencies should end.

Public also punishes for misuse of majority Former President Mukherjee warned of misuse of majority. He said, we think that if we get an absolute majority in the house, then we can do anything and everything, but it should not happen. Such people have often been punished by the public in the past. Pranab said, in parliamentary democracy, a majority gets to form a stable government. You cannot form a government if you do not have an absolute majority. This is the message and the soul of parliamentary democracy. Since 1952, people have now given numerical majority to a party but never a majority of voters supported any party. Political parties never understood this message.
