Ganguly takes over as BCCI president

Former captain Sourav Ganguly took over as the chairman of the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday. The 47-year-old Ganguly will now be the BCCI chief for the next nine months. The 33-month tenure of the Supreme Court-appointed BCCI Committee of Administrators (COA) ended with Ganguly taking over. The BCCI wrote on its Twitter page, “It is official – Ganguly has been formally elected the 39th president of the BCCI.” Ganguly’s appointment was finalized last week. On the other hand, Mahim Verma of Uttarakhand has become the new vice-president. Arun Dhumal, younger brother of former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, has been made treasurer while Jayesh George of Kerala has become joint secretary, Jai Shah has also been made secretary.

Ganguly will have to step down at the end of July next year as per the provisions of the new board constitution as he will have to go on a mandatory break after being in office for six years. Ganguly is expected to take full advantage of the experience gained from his post of secretary and then president of the Bengal Cricket Association. He has set some goals only after being nominated for the post, one of which is restructuring the structure of first-class cricket, putting the administration on the right track and bringing India back to its strong position in the International Cricket Council (ICC). Apart from this, it will have to be seen what is the trend of veteran wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on the international future, day-night test and permanent test centers. Ganguly’s tenure begins at a time when the ICC has excluded India from its newly formed working group which could affect the country’s share in the global body’s revenue.
