Guru Nanak Dev Ji has been an exclusive source of inspiration for those who believe in humanity and for those who are dedicated to the service of humanity with selflessness. We consider ourselves spiritually blessed by celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of this great saint.
The teachings of Nanak Shah Fakir ji have become even more relevant today because man is facing self-suffering. The sense of social, cultural unity is facing threats and man’s faith in human values has been severely shaken. Years ago, Guru Nanak Dev had warned of such situations and suggested reformist steps.
As proud citizens of India, we consider ourselves fortunate to have Guru Nanak Dev Ji as our guide and philosopher. Today, when nefarious forces and radical thinking pose threats to cultural diversity in the world, we are blessed to have Guru Nanak Dev Ji as our guide. He is not just a guru of the Sikh community. He is the great spiritual teacher of humanity because he insists on liberation from disorders of the mind and heart.
Guru Nanak Dev had warned of such situations and suggested reformist steps.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji is a symbol of socio-religious and cultural harmony. Guru Nanak is a unique example of Dev Ji and Bhai Mardana together. It underscores cultural unity. The two great saints were deeply in sync with each other. Bhai Mardana was 10 years older than Guruji and lived with him till his last time. They went on a spiritual journey together for two decades singing the glory of Nirankar. Gurunanak Dev ji used to sing and Bhai Mardana accompanied him on Rabab. He was a unique Rabab player. He even improved it by making it a six-stringed instrument. He was born into a Muslim family. His knowledge of music is reflected in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He has been composed in various ragas. Bhai Mardana is also mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Bhai Gurudas ji has written –
‘Ik Baba Akal Roop Duja Rababi Mardana.’
The world needs to know that – ‘Adi truth, Jugadi truth, is also true, Nanak Hosi is also true.’ It simply means that God is one absolute truth, omnipresent. Except that nothing is real. He is eternal. Was eternal will be eternal.
With such words of wisdom, Guru Nanak Dev Ji awakened the people of India. The philosopher poet Allama Iqbal of Urdu has said –
After all Tauheed’s Punjab finally arose again,
Hinds were awakened by a man-e-Kamil dream
(Once again a divine voice emerged from Punjab proclaiming that God is one. A perfect man Guru Nanak Dev ji awakened India.)
Guru Nanak Dev ji and Bhai Mardana started the tradition of Kirtan, which has proved to be the medium of spiritual awakening. To demonstrate the idea of equality, he started the tradition of organizing langar. Years later we have come to understand that this was a revolutionary religious reformist move.
Guru Nanak Dev ji gave spiritual splendor to India. He said that inner awakening is the only valuable thing. He declared that all are equal and all are full of divine energy. Through his spiritual travels, Guru Nanak Dev Ji awakened India and exalted its glory.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji followed what he preached. He imbibed every word he spoke and brought social reforms. We have the best learning of his philosophy for the good of humanity. He said- Always be on the side of truth and be ready to serve humanity. Always remove the five evils – work, anger, greed, attachment, ego. Gurus are the true source of knowledge. Have faith in Guru.
Let us always be ready to strengthen Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings, global brotherhood and cultural integrity in our daily lives.
