The International Cricket Council (ICC) can now make Test matches four days instead of five. In such a situation, the competition involved in the World Test Championship from the year 2023 will be four days. The ICC believes that this will save time. The ICC Cricket Committee will formally consider changing the Test matches to four days instead of five for the 2023-2031 season. Having a four-day test will save time and give the ICC time to host more global competitions. The way the T20 league is being spread across the world, the ICC wants a four-day Test. This will also reduce the cost of hosting. If the four-day Test matches were played in the 2015-2023 season, then 335 days would be saved from the game. The four-day test is not a new concept. Earlier this year England and Ireland played the four-day Test. Earlier in 2017, South Africa and Zimbabwe also played a four-day Test match.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) can now make Test matches four days instead of five.
At the same time, Cricket Australia (CA) chief Kevin Roberts feels that the four-day Test should be seriously considered. Roberts said, ‘This is an issue on which we have to seriously consider this week. One has to rise above emotions on this matter, but it should be seen only according to the facts. We need to see in terms of time and overs, how much time has been taken on average in Test matches in the last five-ten years. England batsman Jose Butler feels that it should be done for four days to make it live.
Australian spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday strongly condemned the ICC’s proposal for a four-day Test, calling it ‘ridiculous’. Australian head coach Justin Langer is also not in favor of tampering in the traditional format. The England and Wales Cricket Board supported it with caution while BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said it was too early to make any statement on the matter.
Shastri, McGraw are against change
The ICC proposal has been opposed by many veterans including Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri and former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath.Shastri says that no changes should be made in the test format. Shastri is against the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) policy of changing Test cricket to four days instead of five days. Shastri says that there have been many such excellent tests whose results have come in the last day. Shastri further said that India won the series against Australia recently, all those Test matches also lasted till the last day. At the same time, the ICC argues that if the Test match is done for 4 days instead of 5 days, then it will save a lot of time and manage the cricket schedule better.Test cricket will also benefit greatly from this rule. Also, ticket sales will also increase significantly. At the same time, Australian great bowler McGraw said that he is against the proposed idea of the ICC, in which the five-day game was suggested for four days. Apart from McGraw, current Australian team captain Tim Paine is also against the change. Penn says that this will not yield the right results and many matches will be drawn. Many other cricketers also believe the same.
