Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed displeasure over the agitation of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the confrontation with Delhi Police over the increase in hostel fees and other fees. Shah met Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and sought answers on the entire situation. Shah asked Nishank to personally intervene and bring the situation back to normal. Shah complains that the Ministry of Human Resources has defaulted in handling the situation of JNU. According to senior sources, Shah bluntly said that such agitation of students in universities is not right.

Earlier too, on many issues, student movements were launched in many universities including JNU. The meeting between Shah and Nishank is considered significant as JNU students have accused the Delhi Police of being autocratic. The Delhi Police works directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs.According to sources, Shah also said that the decision on increased hostel fees and other fees can be withdrawn. Nishank told Shah that the decision to partially refund the fee hike has already been taken. A three-member committee has also been formed to interact with student leaders and organizations. Nishank assured that the situation would be normalized.
